I had never heard of Gabe Suarez or Suarez International until a rather unflattering article about him came out in the December 2005 issue of SWAT magazine.

I've never bought any of his books or DVDs, never took any of his courses, or even met the man... but this clip seems to offer pretty sound techniques for CQB.

I know the guy is surrounded by controversy... I found this article re-posted several places:

SMPD Officers Charged With Fraud
Clara Sturak
Associate editor

On Friday, March 2, two Santa Monica Police Officers were arrested in connection with conspiracy to defraud the City of Santa Monica through Workers Compensation fraud. Officers Jason Comer and Gabriel Suarez were arrested along with Suarez' wife Cheryl Suarez.

According to a press release issued by the Public Information Office of the Santa Monica Police Department, the three were charged after a "long term and intensive investigation" on the part of the Department's Internal Criminal Unit, the Los Angeles District Attorney's Office, and the California State Department of Insurance.
Comer, 32, a six-year veteran, and Suarez 40, a twelve year veteran, along with Mrs. Suarez, are charged with four criminal counts, explains Deputy District Attorney Craig Omura, who led the DA's portion of the investigation. "Count one is conspiracy to commit workers compensation fraud, count two is workers compensation fraud, count three is money laundering, and count six is grand theft, because the money they obtained was over $400." Counts four and five, both for perjury, apply only to Officer Suarez, in regards to false depositions he gave in March and June of 2000. Details of the case have not yet been released.

The investigation, says Omura, has been going on since October of 2000, when the SMPD became aware of possible criminal activity. "They brought the information to [the District Attorney's office] in November of 2000. At that time we began a three-pronged investigation with the Santa Monica Police and the State Department of Insurance." SMPD did the most of the investigative footwork, according to Omura, consulting with the other two departments as to "what elements [they] needed to prove."

The charges and subsequent arrests were not made public until March 7, with an interdepartmental memo sent by SMPD Chief James T. Butts. Although there has been concern that some City officials were not made aware of the situation until several days following the arrests, Judy Rambeau, Assistant to the City Manager states that the City Manger's office was aware of the investigation from its beginnings. "The City Manager is always alerted when something like this is going on," said Rambeau in an interview on Monday. "That doesn't mean we have all of the details as the investigation proceeds. The police need to keep tight control over who knows what's happening at any given time."

In fact, that's exactly why City officials were not informed. Chief Butts' memo states that "there are other long-term investigations concerning potential fraudulent application for Workers Compensation benefits by other members of the department that continue." SMPD Public Information Officer Captain Gary Gallinot confirmed in a telephone interview with the Mirror that, "it was our intent that the investigations be entirely wrapped up before we went public." But, says Gallinot, the District Attorney's office felt they had enough information to go forward, and "since they are the prosecuting authority, it was up to them."

Once any arrest is made it becomes a matter of public record. However, the SMPD did not issue a statement on the day of the arrests. According to Gallinot, "the reason [the arrests weren't] made public is because we did not want to jeopardize the ongoing investigations. Once we realized it was going to be made public , our strategy had to change, and notifications were made."

Gallinot could not comment on the ongoing investigations, except to say that they are "specific" in nature, and that the DA's office is involved.

"It's important to note," he said, "that this investigation was started by our police department. We are vigorously involved in the discipline and prosecution of misconduct [on the part] of our employees. If you don't look for misconduct or criminal activity, you seldom find it. The fact that we do so shines a positive light on our institutional integrity."

Jason Comer, Gabriel Suarez and Cheryl Suarez are scheduled to be arraigned on Wednesday, March 14. If convicted, Jason Comer and Cheryl Suarez could serve maximum prison sentences of 5 years, 8 months, and Gabriel Suarez could serve a maximum of 7 years, 8 months.

I either see raving reviews or folks calling him a total douche... there doesn't seem to be any "in between"...

I pissed him and some of his instructor staff off pretty bad not too long ago. :)

Some of his techniques are solid enough, but his mindset is utter crap. He has "hero" complex in my opinion.

I've come across several "types" of instructors and trainers in the past several years...

Some are full of themselves, some are just full of sh t. Some blow my mind they EVER made it in the firearms training industry.

It's a pretty tight-nit and small industry, and for the most part "self-policing." Once, I had an instructor who was discussing an argument he had with Clint Smith - "gunfighter extraordinaire... who's never been in a gunfight." Well, I don't know Clint's history, but he seems solid, enough, in my opinion based on my limited exposure.

Some people live for fighting, and some people live to avoid fighting. The BEST fights of my career are the ones I've never been in... but I continue to train for the fights I can't avoid.

I do like some of Clint Smith's stuff. I try to adopt the same mindset of "fight with what you have". I do like how he does cover fighting with more traditional type firearms, rather than spending 100% of his time on the uber tactical stuff.

My pet peeve: Seeing an instructor for a carry conceal class show up in full tactical gear (vest, drop leg holster, etc, etc). I've seen that and it annoys the heck outta me for some reason...lol.

My pet peeve: Instructors who think they are teaching THE way, not A way. I don't just mean with with firearms, tactics, et al... I mean with ANYTHING.

Case In Point: The Denver Drill

Denver Drill: A drill that essentially re-creates the rescue of Denver firefighter Mark Langvardt. It incorporates the use of a leveraged body and an inclined plane (bio-mechanics) to get a victim up and out of a narrow window in a narrow hallway (the Denver Prop).
Denver Prop: A training prop designed after the actual dimensions of the confined area that claimed 16 year veteran fire fighter Mark Langvardt's life in 1992. Specifically, it is a 'hallway' 28" wide, 8' long with a window at one end that is 20" wide by 28" high and the sill is 42" from the floor. The prop is used for the Denver Drill.

About 10 or 12 years ago, I attended an advanced extrication class with the fire department. The course on the "Denver Drill" was taught by two firefighters... one a seasoned veteran, and the other a two-year firefighter and brand new instructor. The older instructor was letting the young buck take point on teaching the course.

The kid started off by telling us the story of Firefighter Mark Langvardt's death. He used the Denver Prop to help with his narration. He explained how two "beefy" firemen were unable to brute force lift Langvardt out of the window.

This video tells the story, then shows the method they were going to teach us...

He, then, picked a volunteer... one of us students to don bunker gear and an airpack, and play "unconscious." He, then, picked me and another student to demonstrate an attempt to get the "fallen firefighter" out. His intent was to demonstrate how we couldn't do it without using his magical technique.

This video shows the technique I figured out and used to extricate the fallen firefighter. It's not "THE WAY" he was taught, and was subsequently going to teach us. HE GOT PISSED! He was upset because we failed to make his point, and the fact that HIS way was not the ONLY way that worked. I shrugged and told him "we just saved this firefighter's life, what's wrong with that?"

The older instructor stepped in and "took over" the class. He told me, "Well done. If you were in Denver, Firefighter Langvardt might still be alive."

The method in the second video had not yet been "figured out" until I demonstrated it that day. Now, it's integrated in firefighter training all over the country.

My point is this, the only WRONG way to do something is the way that DOESN'T WORK.
