Super Tuck Deluxe Crossbreed IWB Holster

22 Jan 2012

Posted by cddbrowns in Product Review

This is my presentation and open box review of the Super Tuck Deluxe Crossbreed IWB Holster for my XD Sub Compact. Trent from Crossbreed has been nice enough to send a holster for an FCF review, and so far I am impressed. Upon first opening the package, you get the holster, which is packed very nicely along with a receipt and directions of how to maintain and "adjust" your holster if needed. Here is a snapshot of the holster itself after removing it from the package.

Posted Image

Now when I say "adjust" your holster as needed, I am talking about the retention of the kydex shape with the leather to hold the firearm in place. As you can see in the pic, the kydex is formed around the particular firearm that the holster is designed for. Crossbreed says in their own paperwork that they are going for more of a middle ground tension on the firearms in their system, but it is fully adjustable to the users liking, whether it be loose or a lot tighter. There are directions that come with the holster on how to accomplish this.

Moving on, after doing a little "lookin up" about this holster, this is the horse hide "natural" color, and it is rather soft, the front and the back (I would imagine) would be rather soft against the skin. Now, I am not in the position to be able to test this at this very second because I am currently in a back brace for 3 months following a spinal fusion.......so it will have to wait for April before the actual fitting and walking around feel test can happen. Sorry bout that folks, not like I wanted my back to go.....Stamped into the leather is a nice logo for the company, seen here.

Posted Image

Being a full blooded Irish man myself, I can appreciate this company logo, and enjoy sportin it around! :-)

The steelclips, one being shown here, are very nice, looks like powder coated, and sturdy. While there is enough play in the metal to adjust for thicker belts or pants or whatever hulkamania pants you may be wearing....Posted Image You will be fully capable of adjusting this holster to fit your needs, and there is enough "spring" back to adjust back. In one of my tests, I bent it pretty far out, almost 90 degrees out, and put it back to its starting position. While there may be a 1/8 inch difference (that minute, not trying to be that "technical) it is hardly noticeable than the original position of the OTHER steelclip. with these SteelClips, you can see the screw holding them in place is rather far down on the clip itself as well. This is to be able to tuck your shirt in while wearing this holster. This is a nice option to have for those "not so happy" people of the world (skinny), but none the less, a nice option. Again, at this time, I am not able to test this out as I am incapacitated at the moment. You can see how this system works in the video commercial at the top of this post. On the back of the holster, that same screw is adjustable. Shown here.

This is used to go deeper, or more "shallow" in your pant line according to your build, youre preferred position of the firearm, and how concealed you wish it to be. I personally love this option as I am a very large man, tall, and big, and round, and honestly, the higher the pistol, the more comfortable I am going to be that I can get to it quickly instead of having to go through a very tight belt holding up my oversized pants that are trying to deal with the fact that I have no butt when compared to the rest of me and I have to tighten the living snot out of the thing to keep my pants from pulling a TV repairman every movement of the day. (Ill let you ponder that mental image for a while......)

World War Z

I really enjoyed this book. The way the book is written is in a past tense of the war, basically a reporter takes all his interview data from before, during and after the war, and compiles it in one book. The way its done is really interesting. It starts out with the first section of the book talking about the early warnings of the break out, and how the governments blow it off as another overblown scare by the countries that started it. Interviews with people who capitalized on the scare, "rabies" that they called it. One person capitalizing on the fear by developing a rabies vaccine that will protect everyone from the ongoing epidemic that is turning people "rabid." How certain countries are taking more notice of the problem while others are waiting and seeing what happens and so on.

Next section deals with where the blame should go. US government is looking towards China as the start of the problem. Goes through several interviews with people around the world explaining what their theories are and their personal stories of the early problems that arose.

Next is the "great panic" where people were fleeing their homes, looting, killing, so on and so on. Explaining how the government was trying to control the chaos, telling people how to survive, how to deal with the epidemic. What people talk about is survival, to go to the cold areas so the zombies freeze and they can just "lobo" them while frozen stiff. Problems are food and other survival needs that are in short supply in the cold areas though.

Further sections of the book go through certain battles all around the world, the war tactics, the weapons used, the people they looked to for ideas, the studies they did on the "enemy" and the emotional responses of the people that are trying to survive. Even goes into the ones that "pretend" to be a zombie in order to survive. How they almost transform into that zombie, emotional response to how to stay alive, and will power their way to not noticing the pain when shot like a normal zombie. How the military thought the zombies were turning on each other when the "pretenders" would be attacked in the middle of a pack of zombies. how the zombies have almost a 6th sense, able to see and know where the pray is without eyes, ears, so on and so on. Explains how they continue to move, what happens to their bodies, the hoards beneath the water in the oceans and lakes, so on and so on.

It is an amazing and very detailed book. I would recommend this to anyone who is interested in military, war tactics, zombies, firearms and survival, and several other things that would be associated with this type of situation. Please, do yourself a favor and pick up this book. Excellent read!

NRA Firearms Record Book

12 Jan 2012

Posted by cddbrowns in Product Review
I picked up the NRA Firearms Record Book, and I have to say, I am very impressed with the quality and organization of this book. As you can see, it fits nicely with my other leatherbound books in the book case. The pages are made with an old style of paper, scratchy, really nice, and you get that old time feel to it while writting. I personally LOVE that, but that is my opinion.

Posted Image

The front of the book shows the NRA symbol, along with the title of the book and a special brass clasp in the shape of a bullet and loop. It is not the easiest thing to unlatch, and probably the only "fault" I would find with the book at this time.

Posted Image

Close up of the clasp.

Posted Image

Now for the meat and potatoes of the book. As you can see, the info that you can put in the book is more than adequate. Including a square set aside for a pic of the actual firearm.

Review of the TAC-STAR Side Saddle

03 Jan 2012

Posted by Doc in Product Review
Took my super sexy wife to Cabellas today in Lacy Washington, that's WA State. I went with the intentions of buying 1K of .223 ammo until I saw their price. I then went on a search for a sling to work with the Mossberg 500 to no avail. On the very same isle I spotted this Tac-Star side saddle shell holder. It holds 6 extra rounds and holds them securely. I have used other shell holder and found them to be unreliable as they loosen after every firing. This is because normally they screw into the ABS plastic stock and not directly to the receiver.

Installation took 10 minutes max. Remove one receiver screw and replace it with a longer one and then push the trigger housing pin out with a long hex screw. The mount plate for the opposite side of the shotgun reciver is metal and then the ABS plastic shell j=holder then mounts to the metal plate. The plate is threaded and therefore should not back out. I will hopefully test this on the coming weekend and if I find it to back out I will use loc-tite to secure it.

I paid $39.99 for this side saddle and and the spare 6 shells are nice to have. The Mossberg itself hold 7 in the tube and one in the pipe of the 2 3/4 shells. One less for 3".

Woolrich Elite Discreet Twill CCW Jacket

30 Dec 2011

Posted by cddbrowns in Product Review
Posted Image

Hello all, I wanted to share my experience with this Woolrich Elite Discreet Twill CCW Jacket. I have not had it very long, but what time I have had it for, it is an outstanding jacket! Starting out fast with the side pockets of the jacket. Not only are they much deeper than normal every day jackets, they have (seen in this pic) holders built in for various items you wish, from pocket size firearms to various size magazines and so on. VERY nice for holding anything you wish, if these were the only pockets on this jacket, it would be plenty for every day needs. Cell phone, keys, lighter and cigar, anything you wish to carry (on a resonable basis) will fit in here WITH the small CCW of your choice and backup magazines.

Posted Image

Posted Image

Moving on to the inside pockets of this jacket, these things are set up very nicely for anything you wish. Not only do they go around to under the arm pit, simply for the reason of holding a heavier firearm with the shoulder bracing the weight instead of the front of the jacket being pulled down, but they, too, are set up with built in holster for your CCW firearms. As you can see in the pics below, these pockets are sealed with velcro to avoid the spilling of anything when the jacket is taken off and laid down, but the deepness of these pockets alone will make sure nothing comes out of there. There are identical pockets on both sides of the inside of this jacket, lefty or righty will have no issues in storing their CCW's built for them.

The Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks

20 Dec 2011

Posted by cddbrowns in Product Review
Posted Image

I read this book in a matter of a week, work permitting the limited amount time....., but I couldnt put this book down. With gems in here like “Hooking on scuba gear and blindly diving into zombie-infested water is a wonderful way to mix the two childhood terrors of being eaten and drowning.” “Zombies will try to scale any surface no matter how unfeasable or even impossible. In all but the easiest situations, these attempts have met with failure. Even in the case of ladders, when simple hand-over-hand coordination is required, only one in four zombies will succeed.”and “Unlike the escapee, your team of hunters will be out during the brightest, hottest, most excruciating part of the day. Make sure each hunter is well supplied with water and antisunstroke accessories.”, the humor filled satire takes actual survival points, great survival points, and puts them into the situation of a zombie outbreak. Things that are covered in this book are how to tell an outbreak is happening and what level of an outbreak it is, how to tell someone is a zombie, what to wear and what not to wear, what to carry and what not to carry, how to store enough supplies in the case of staying protected in your home, and what to store up on if you are looking to bug out. Where to go and where NOT to go. How to prepare for looters and idiots trying to take your supplies. Then the golden part of the book, the meat and potatoes that was so good, another book spawned off to expand on this part, the actual Zombie events in history. Do yourself a favor, keep the sense of humor on the edge of your mind while reading this book, but also take the actual points of this book serious. Be ready when/if that day comes people! And always remember....

1. Organize before they rise!
2. They feel no fear, why should you?
3. Use your head: cut off theirs.
4. Blades don't need reloading.
5. Ideal protection = tight clothes, short hair.
6. Get up the staircase, then destroy it.
7. Get out of the car, get onto the bike.
8. Keep moving, keep low, keep quiet, keep alert!
9. No place is safe, only safer.
10. The zombie may be gone, but the threat lives on.

Enjoy the read.
